Career in Veterinary Science
Veterinary Science deals with the study of animal health, care,
medical procedures, breeding, feeding and related aspects. The job of a
veterinarian is challenging and at the same time mentally fulfilling as
you are directly linked to the well being of animals. India has the largest
livestock population in the world and hence the demand for experienced and
qualified veterinarian is bound to increase significantly. Further the research
initiatives taken by the Government and the industry has also open new areas
of opportunities for professionals in the field. Job prospects are very
bright for the professionals in the field. As people are also keeping more
and more pets and the growth of the dairy and poultry industries, milk and
meat processing industries etc. are giving impetus to the demand for the
profession in the country.
Eligibility:
For taking admission in the B.V.Sc & A.H. (Bachelor of Veterinary Science
and Animal Husbandry) course, the minimum requisite qualification is 10+2
with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB). For national level test minimum
percentage required is 50% for general category and 40% for SC/ST. The minimum
age required is 17 years. Candidates are selected for this five years B.V.Sc
& A.H. course on the basis of entrance test held by State Agriculture
University at State level and by VCI (Veterinary Council of India) at National
level. 15% seats in every college are filled through national level test
and rest by the State level test.
Where to study
Presently there are around 40 veterinary colleges in the country which are
imparting the B.V.Sc & A.H degree. There are also 40 State Agricultural
Universities in the country of which seven are specialized universities
dealing exclusively with Veterinary Science and Animal Science including
fishery education.
Job opportunities:
Job opportunities are on the rise in the sector. If one wants to go in academics,
one can go for post graduation (M.V.Sc), which is the minimum qualification
for the post of Assistant Professor. There are also opportunities overseas
for higher studies which can be pursued to gain super specialty in the area.
If one wants, one can also establish a private practice after obtaining
the necessary licenses. MBA along with B.V.Sc & A.H also provides the
candidate better opportunity in various companies and industries at managerial
grade. NGO devoted to the cause of animal welfare also provide good opportunities
to qualified professionals in the field.
Compensation packages
Qualified professionals can start with a take home package of 15000/- to
Rs. 20000/- depending upon qualifications and sectors where they join. Pay
packets in private sector are much better and working conditions are also
conducive. The compensation increases significantly with experience and
qualification. A roaring practice established to cater to the needs can
also pay handsome returns over a period of time.
Skills required
A genuine love and affection for animals, patience and understanding, willingness
to work odd hours and ability to work hard are prerequisites for being successful
in the profession. The rewards are plenty and satisfaction immense for making
a contribution to the welfare of animals and alleviate their sufferings.
