Fashion Designing - Educational Qualifications and Skills Required

Until a few years ago, there was not a single Indian name in the global fashion scene. Fashion designing was considered a course meant for those who could not make it to engineering and medical. However with the establishment of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and other premier fashion schools, a troupe of gifted designers is already making its mark in the national and international fashion arena. Today names like Ritu Kumar, Ritu Beri, Rohit Bal, Suriely Goel, Sunit Verma, JJ Vallaya and Tarun Tahiliani have virtually become household names and evoke feelings of envy and pride alike.

Where to study fashion design?
Your race for admission into a reputed fashion school should begin at the school level itself. Subjects like drawing, painting, home science, computer graphics will all help you to develop your creativity and use that eventually in the fashion designing course. If you are initiated in garment fashion designing, a post-graduate courses in garment manufacture, merchandising, etc. will help you in your career choice. You can also complete a course in apparel design or in accessory design or specifically in jewellery design, knitwear design, footwear design or leather design. Skills Required
Along with fashion consciousness and creativity, you also need excellent communication skills to articulate your ideas and understand the client's requirements. Perseverance and willingness to put long hours is a must to make a mark in career. You also need considerable aptitude and talent to be treated as designer material. You must be highly creative to combine colours, shades and textures, and express your ideas through sketches. A good eye for finer details is a must quality to take care of little but important nuances of the industry. You also need to have a fair amount of knowledge about manufacturing technology, plant efficiency, labour motivation, zero-defect production to be successful in the profession.
